Schauspielhaus Bochum
One of the leading venues for contemporary theatre and performing arts in the German-speaking theatre scene for over a hundred years, the Schauspielhaus Bochum produces new performances of theatre, dance, and interdisciplinary art each season and tours them across Germany, Europe, and international festivals. Named “Theatre of the Year” in 2022 for the Germany, Austria, and Switzerland region.
Since 2018, Johan Simons has served as Artistic Director, leading the Schauspielhaus Bochum as a city theatre for the 21st century where artists from diverse nations, cultures, and disciplines find a creative home. The heart of the theatre is its permanent acting ensemble, bringing cultural influences from across Europe and the world.
The theatre also includes the Junges Schauspielhaus (Young Theatre), whose programme is shaped by new narrative forms for a modern and diverse urban society. The Schauspielhaus Bochum operates four venues: the main Schauspielhaus (up to 800 seats), the Kammerspiele (400 seats), the Oval Office (100 seats), and the Theaterrevier — the venue for children’s and youth theatre located 2 kilometres away.
